Sabbath School Lesson 2017 Review Quarter 3 Lesson 7
Sabbath School Lesson 2017 Quarter 3 Lesson 7 Friday
You will remember that the law was an added and added and multiplied because of all the sin and the picture I have is of God gathering His family together repeatedly and saying “all this sinning has got to stop” and God is saying I want all the murdering to stop do I make myself clear and I want all the stealing to stop and all the lying to stop. I want an end to all of this.
Now this means that a very serious situation has happened in the family have any of you ever gathered your children around at breakfast and try to extract from them promises for the new day that your children will not murder anyone on the playground after school. Can you imagine yourself hearing through the open window from your neighbors house the father over there thundering from Sinai at his children saying children I want you to promise that none of you will murder anyone today do I make myself clear? You would say I wonder what on earth is going on in that family and wife I want no adultery whilst I’m out of the office today do you promise wife? No adultery you would be wondering to yourself what kind of relationship do they have?
Can you imagine how God has been mocked by his enemy. Can you imagine Satan touring around the universe with glee sighing listen to God telling his children to stop being Immoral and to stop hating and all the rest of it, what kind of a family does he have what kind of a Father is he?
What a risk God has run in using all of these laws but would you admit that we have needed them and more than that beyond the 10 Commandments he has had to say now look, I would much rather you turn the other cheek but it doesn’t work at the foot of Sinai. We had better for a while have an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth. I know you will misunderstand me and think that I am arbitrary and severe but that’s the only way that I can have order in the camp.
Now, this matter of divorce in the beginning it wasn’t like this Jesus said, but because the stiffness of your necks and the hardness of your hearts Jesus explained God gave them divorce laws. Then the people said God approves divorce and they came to Jesus and said how do you feel about divorce are You going to contradict that too? Jesus said yes I am. In the beginning it was not like this it’s only because the stiffness of you necks and the hardness of your hearts that I gave you the divorce laws,
I wasn’t condoning divorce or recommending divorce that’s the best I could do and that covers the whole long list even the visual aids the killing of animals. The one who sees the little sparrow fall, do you think he enjoyed the killing of the pigeons and of the lambs and all the other animals and can you think of the mess the blood everywhere, the smell it wasn’t very pleasant do you think God enjoys this kind of thing that is the only way that He could appropriately represent what needed to be understood.
You see the Law was added it was the same basic principle of love and life and mutual trust and respect and trustworthiness that’s always been the basis of freedom and security in God’s universe that’s never changed God didn’t invent this because of the emergency that’s always been the basis of freedom and God will never give that up, He’d rather give us all up then give that up.
But He had to express this in minute details because of our ignorance and our stubbornness and our misbehavior until Christ should come or to bring us to Christ. If we take first until Christ came to explain that what God wants is trust and love.
Is there no mention of trust and love in the old testament?
When Jesus said all God wants is love and trust what did He quote? He quoted Leviticus and Deuteronomy the writer who wrote down all these laws so you know in the book of John it says “The law came through Moses (in the King James version) but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ” and some like to play on the fact that the word but is in italics I remember once there was a preacher said “now students tell me why do printers put words in italics” and nobody from the church answered what the preacher wanted to hear so he answered for them why he said words I’ll put in italics for “emphasis”.
And then the preacher preach the whole sermon on this word that wasn’t there. Words are in italics in the King James Version because they’re not there in the original but that verse and John has lived too much misunderstanding the Lord came through Moses but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. The message of grace and truth came all through the Old Testament besides who was the leader of Israel in the Old Testament first Corinthian’s 10:4 Christ was the leader anyway, so to divide the new testament from the Old Testament is a very serious mistake and all of us who have gone through the 66 books of the Bible no there is an unbroken revelation about Grace, truth and trust and love all through the Bible all 66 books.
The man who attempts to keep the commandments of God from a sense of obligation merely—because he is required to do so—will never enter into the joy of obedience. (in fact) He does not obey. (That’s the essence of legalism. It’s keeping the commandments of God from a sense of obligation merely because he is required to do so, and what kind of a God would you have behind that? But that person never enters into the joy of obedience. In fact he does not obey. But he’s trying to keep the commandments. How can you say he does not obey. Because what the law asks for is love, and trust and mutual respect, and he is not offering that. He is begrudgingly from a sense of obligation not love and trust, but obligation because he is required to do so. His very attitude is defeating his whole attempt to obey the law. There is no way to obey the law without love and trust. There is just no way to do it.) When the requirements of God are accounted a burden because they cut across human inclination, (and Paul had that in Romans 7 remember?) we may know that the life is not a Christian life. True obedience is the outworking of a principle within. It springs from the love of righteousness, (i love it, it’s really the only way to live) the love of the law of God. (How about the 119th Psalm? The Psalmist say’s I love it I love it over and over) The essence of all righteousnessis loyalty to our Redeemer. This will lead us to do right because it is right (because He said so?)—because right doing is pleasing to God. Christ’s Object Lesson page 97
God requires perfection of His children. (That is to say there is no way He can let unloving, untrustworthy people into the free society to come He can’t do it, it will undermine for everybody else, God requires this of His children) His law is a transcript of His own character, and it is the standard of all character. This infinite standard is presented to all that there may be no mistake in regard to the kind of people whom God will have to compose His kingdom. (No mistake, it’s the way its going to be, it’s our guarantee that we will be safe and free for eternity.) The life of Christ on earth was a perfect expression of God’s law, and when those who claim to be children of God become Christlike in character, they will be obedient to God’s commandments. Then the Lord can trust them to be of the number who shall compose the family of heaven. Christ Object Lessons page 315
There is a lot of de-emphasis on obedience to the law, in some explanations of righteousness by faith. Heaven is not going to be peopled with pardoned criminals but with trustworthy children who will not abuse the privileges of freedom in the hereafter. So to stress forgiveness only is not enough. Mrs White makes this very clear.
