The Law as Our Schoolmaster
Sabbath School Lesson 2017 Quarter 3 Lesson 7 Wednesday
The law of God is an expression of His very nature; it is an embodiment of the great principle of love, and hence is the foundation of His government in heaven and earth. Steps to Christ page 60
Read third paragraph,
“Paul’s description of the law as a pedagogue further clarifies his understanding of the role of the law. The law was added to point out sin and provide instruction. The very nature of this task means that the law also has a negative aspect, and that’s because it rebukes and condemns us as sinners. Yet, even this “negative” aspect God uses for our benefit, because the condemnation that the law brings is what drives us to Christ. Thus, the law and the gospel are not contradictory. God designed them to work together for our salvation.”
This is telling you that they are operating on a human law construct which Paul wrote in Hebrews 5:13 if you’re at this level “you are not acquainted with the teaching about righteousness.” They are try to teach us about righteousness by faith but if you have this model you are not acquainted with the teaching about righteousness but they are the authors of our Sabbath School Quarterly lesson. This is why there is a form of godliness but no power because people are claiming righteousness in a legal setting where they are declared to be righteous but they are not righteous.
What does Romans 2:4 says brings us to repentance? It is the kindness of God.
Does the law have a negative aspect?
When did Adam run and hide from God before or after the law was given at Sinai?
So how can he be condemned if the law hasn’t been given yet, because according to our Sabbath School Quarterly the law (which is an expression of God which should give us concerns on the mindset of our Authors in and of itself) “also has a negative aspect, and that’s because it rebukes and condemns us as sinners” which then “drives us to Christ”, but in fact in reality when your under condemnation it actually causes you to run and hide from God.
This is why we still don’t have transformation because they are teaching that its a good thing that the law condemns you when you feel like you should be punished and you feel shameful and you feel guilty thats a good thing according to the authors, but what in reality it leads you to run and hide from God. Whilst your running and hiding from God, you are sowing your fig leaves. What are your fig leaves. So when He finds you, you won’t be naked. And what are your fig leaves?
- Well I’ve got the payment paid
- I’ve got the robe i’m going to claim so that God can’t see me
- I’ve got Christ’s blood covering me so when the Father looks at me He cannot see my sin
- I’ve got my Advocate standing between me and the Father so that He can’t get near me
- I’m putting all these obstacles in the way of me and Him because I’m under condemnation
This is what they are teaching, it’s corrupt!
Why did he run and hide? Where did the condemnation originate? Was it from the written law or did the condemnation originate in Adam’s changed condition?
So why was the law added later? Because sin numbs, deadens, warps, hardens and people no longer felt conviction, no longer felt shame, guilt, condemnation. You see what happens when we persist in sin, it’s like leprosy thats the metaphor of leprosy.
- It takes away your sensitivity you don’t feel pain.
- So you can commit sin without guilt
- Your heart becomes hard and your conscience becomes seared
- You become so warped you don’t even know right from wrong anymore
- You don’t feel any guilt and shame
You can actually stand out in public and do lewd things and think it’s really cool, i.e. you can drunk and you can get naked in a bar and think it’s really like the coolest thing because your conscience is so warped. This is where they were after slavery and so God because it’s no longer written on their heart because their conscience is so seared they have no capacity to discern right from wrong. He gives them a diagnostic instrument the MRI of the soul, the Ten Commandments.
Thus the written law was needed to diagnose those so sin sick they didn’t think they were sin sick—but the condemnation is in the condition and existed before the written law was given.
Is what the function of written law negative? If you have a tumor and go into the MRI and it reveals the tumor is that a negative aspect of the MRI? Or is it a redemptive and helpful aspect? (I really wish it had ignored the tumor, is this a negative aspect of the MRI that it find a tumor, or is the MRI a beautiful thing because it finds the tumor so that you can be healed. There is no negative aspect to the law, none, no negative aspect.) It’s negative because the authors live under a penal view and under a penal view the law condemns you to be punished which is not good, under the design law point of view it exposes what is wrong so you can be healed. It’s so corrupt this wrong point of view.
The condemnation comes from the condition itself, the law only diagnoses or exposes or reveals the condition. Thus Jesus said:
“Make a tree good and its fruit will be good, or make a tree bad and its fruit will be bad, for a tree is recognized by its fruit. 34 You brood of vipers, how can you who are evil say anything good? For out of the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks. 35 The good man brings good things out of the good stored up in him, and the evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in him. 36 But I tell you that men will have to give account on the day of judgment for every careless word they have spoken. 37 For by your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned.” Matthew 12:33-37
